Bring your Moodle, or start fresh?
If you already run Moodle, the first decision is whether to migrate it or rebuild. Both are valid — it depends on the state of your current site.
ScaleMoodleLMS compared with Rebuild from scratch
Migrating carries your courses, history and users forward; rebuilding starts clean but recreates content. ScaleMoodleLMS supports both — a staging-first migration of your existing Moodle, or a fresh managed environment — so the choice is about what best serves your content, not a limitation of the platform.
Side by side
What differs, honestly
| ScaleMoodleLMS | Rebuild from scratch | |
|---|---|---|
| Your courses & content | Preserved — migrated and validated | Recreated from scratch |
| History, grades & user accounts | Carried over | Lost or manually re-entered |
| Effort & time | Faster — we migrate and validate | Slower — rebuild content and courses |
| Risk | Staging-first validation before cutover | Low data risk, high content effort |
| When it fits | You have an established site worth keeping | Legacy site is unsalvageable or greenfield |
| Supported by ScaleMoodleLMS | Yes — staging-first migration | Yes — a fresh managed environment |
Be honest
When Rebuild from scratch is the better choice
We would rather you pick the right fit than oversell. Rebuild from scratch can be the stronger option when:
- Your current Moodle is a genuine mess and not worth carrying forward.
- You are starting fresh with no existing Moodle to preserve.
- You are doing a major redesign where old content would be replaced anyway.
And when we fit
When ScaleMoodleLMS fits better
- You have an established Moodle with valuable courses, history and users.
- You want continuity for learners and staff with minimal disruption.
- You want the move validated in staging before anything goes live.
